Power Wheelchairs: How far can you go?

A concern for people considering a power wheelchair is how far they can go on a single charge. Range is an important factor when deciding which brand and model is right for you.

The leading model of the Glide power wheelchair range is our CentroGlide. The larger centre wheels provide the power in this model, running on two 75 amp battery system that is rated to travel up to 40km on a single charge. This is enough power storage to keep even the most active power wheelchair operator going all day with complete confidence.

Our ElectraGlide model is a lighter aluminium frame four-wheel chair. The rear-wheels deliver the power from two 24 amp batteries that can travel up to 18km on a single charge.

The very popular JoyGlide is also a lightweight aluminium framed wheelchair in our range. JoyGlide can be pushed manually or operated in powered mode with an easy-to-use joystick. The battery is powerful enough to take you on a distance of up 15km on a single charge.

Glide also supplies a range of power add-on options to transform a manual wheelchair into a powered one. These systems typically include a motorised wheel which can give a boost of power with every manual push, or be operated by a joystick.

Extending the distance.

Traveling on different terrains will affect how long a battery may last on a single charge. For example, going on an uphill climb will use more battery power than just cruising on a roadside pavement. If you maintain a constant and low speed while using your powered wheelchair, it will help in extending the distance and battery life usage. Also, be sure to check that your tires are properly inflated to the recommended pressure and refrain from carrying unnecessary extra weight on your wheelchair.

The specified distances on the Glide powered wheelchair range of models are more than ample for the daily needs of most users. However, you might consider the option of a spare battery and purchase an additional charger cable for charging your batteries while stationary at work.

It’s a good idea to give yourself some time to test the limits of the battery before taking a long journey, so you can be confident your powered wheelchair will get you where you want to go and back.

How to get the most out of your battery.

One of the best things about owning a powered wheelchair is being able to get on and go. All you need is a fully charged battery and you’re off. But proper care is essential to get the most out of your battery’s life.

It is recommended to charge the battery every night. This will ensure a longer life for the battery, and make sure your powered wheelchair is 100% ready to go when you are, every morning.

It normally takes between 4 - 10 hours to charge, depending on the battery type and how low the power level of the battery is when you plug in the charger.

Charging a little longer than 10 hours is fine. However, prolonged charging, such as one or two days, is not advisable.

You should avoid driving your wheelchair until the battery is fully charged. Under-charged battery will reduce your driving range and shorten the battery life.

Do not let your battery run all the way down to empty.

Letting it run down a few times is OK, but frequently letting it go completely flat before charging can affect its life.

When should batteries be replaced?

The warranty for a battery ranges from 12 months to 2 years. However, a battery can last you anywhere between 2 to 10 years, depending on usage and care. If you notice that the batteries are not lasting as long between charges, this is a sign that you will soon need a replacement. Of course, it’s best to order early and be prepared.
